Ruru Central Otago Gewurztraminer 2017
Ruru is the Central Otago brand of Roland and Lucienne van der Wal who own the 20 ha ‘Immigrant’s’ vineyard on Airport Road in Alexandra. The vineyard is planted to 15.5 ha of Pinot Noir, 4 ha of Pinot Gris and 0.5 ha of Gewurztraminer. Lucienne admits that despite the quality of the Gewurztraminer wines, it is a difficult one to work with in the marketplace. Part of it is due to the inconsistent performance in the vineyard, but also the modest consumer demand. Most producers cite the pronunciation of the name as a significant factor, which the van der Wals acknowledge. However, they believe is persisting with Gewurztraminer for its difference it adds to the Ruru range, as well as its quality. Some of the Gewurztraminer fruit is contracted out. The van der Wals have Antony Worch of Alexandra Vintners as their primary winemaker, but for the Gewurztraminer they have Peter Bartle of VinPro as their maker. Here, I review the new 2017 Ruru Gewurztraminer. www.immigrantsvineyard.co.nz
Ruru Central Otago Gewurztraminer 2017 5*****
Bright pale straw-yellow colour, very pale edged. The nose is very fresh and youthfully taut with a finely concentrated core of white florals and exotic rose-petal notes along with lychees, subtle spices, Turkish Delight and a suggestion of honey and musk. The fruit is expressed with clarity and has intensity. Medium-dry to taste, the palate has tightly bound and penetrating flavours of exotic florals, with hints of white pepper and spices, Turkish Delight and honey. The fruit forms a concentrated heart with soft, rounded textures and balanced acidity. The wine has a fresh firmness but flows smoothly with good linearity, leading to a sustained finish. This is a taut and penetrating medium-dry Gewurztraminer with good depth and intensity of exotic florals, spices and musk and a smooth mouthfeel. Serve with Thai, Vietnamese and Japanese cuisine over the next 3+ years. Hand-picked fruit from the ‘Immigrant’s Vineyard’, a portion given a few hours skin contact, the remainder WBP, and all fermented in stainless-steel to 13.3% alc. and 7.2 g/L RS. 18.5/20 Feb 2018 RRP $26.50

Cameron Douglas (NZ’s only MS) came to the Alexandra sub-region and tasted our Ruru Pinot Noir 2015 & 2016 :

Ruru Pinot Noir 2015

Ripe, fruity and bright with calm silky tannins, bright red fruit flavours and red apple skin note; lovely acidity and balance, medium+ length and moderate complexity - that I suspect will build over time. Very good. 90 points

Ruru Pinot Noir 2016

Very youthful, fruity and quite juicy on the palate, some lively firmer tannins need time to resolve, but this wine has great potential to age well. 89 points.

Ruru Central Otago 2016 Rosé and 2015 Pinot Noir

‘Ruru’ is the brand name of Immigrant’s Vineyard on Airport Road, Alexandra in Central Otago. Operated by Lucienne and Roland van der Wal who purchased the 20 ha vineyard in 2013, the ‘Ruru’ name for Maori owl was chosen as the birds are seen around their vineyard, and importantly, it is short and catchy as well as being easy to remember! The van der Wals are serious about the quality of their wines and engaged Antony Worch of Alexandra Vintners to make their wines from the 2015 vintage. A small amount of Gewurztraminer is made from 0.5 ha; there are 4 ha of Pinot Gris and there are 15.5 ha of Pinot Noir. Here, I review the 2016 Rosé and 2015 Pinot Noir.

Ruru Central Otago Rosé 2016****
Pale pink colour with slight purple hues, lighter on the rim. This has a fresh, tightly bound nose with delicate aromas of strawberries and raspberries, with watermelon and subtle notes of fruit pastille confectionary, unfolding lifted red floral elements and thirst-quenching mineral hints. Dry to taste and medium-bodied, the palate is finely concentrated and tightly bound, revealing light flavours of strawberries, raspberries, cranberries and subtle notes of confectionary, along with red floral nuances. The mouthfeel is refreshingly crisp with a fine phenolic thread and bright, background mouthwatering acidity. The flavours lead with god tension and energy to a light, dry finish of strawberries and florals. This is an elegant, mouthwatering dry rosé with strawberry, floral and subtle confectionary notes and a dry, floral finish. Serve as an aperitif, or with canapes over the next 2 years. 100% Pinot Noir fruit, clones 5, 667 and 777, hand-picked, given 36 hours skin contact and cool-fermented in tank to 13.0% alc. and 6.4 g/L RS. 17.5/20 Sep 2016

Ruru Central Otago Pinot Noir 2015***

The nose unfolds dark raspberry and earthy elements with aeration. Medium-bodied, the palate is elegant in concentration and finely presented with bright, lively fruit flavours of dark raspberries and thyme herbs, minerals and reduction. The mouthfeel is fresh and vibrant with fine-grained tannin extraction and refreshing acidity lending balance and vitality. The palate has linearity and carries to a long, lingering, sweet, raspberry fruited and herb nuanced finish with reduction notes. This is a fresh, bright, lively and elegant Pinot Noir with raspberry and herb flavours, fine structure and a layer of reduction. Ruru 2015 Central Otago Rosé and Gewurztraminer
After their first vintage of their own label in 2014, Lucienne and Roland van der Walof the Immigrant’s Vineyard have decided to change the brand name from ‘Plovers Nest’ to ‘Ruru’ (a Maori owl) to ensure a greater market perception and reception. With the change comes a redesigned livery that is colourful and stylised. In 2012, the van der Wals purchased their 20 ha vineyard that was established with 14 ha of Pinot Noir, 4 ha of Pinot Gris and 2 ha of Gewurztraminer over 2001-2004 on Airport Road between Clyde and Alexandra, to give themselves an outdoors lifestyle following many years in hospitality and supermarket businesses. As contract growers for Toi Toi, their own wine beckoned, and they had Dave Grant of Shaky Bridge make 100 cases each of Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer, along with 4,000 L of Pinot Noir. In fine-tuning, the van der Wals have reduced the amount of Gewurztraminer from 2.0 ha to 0.5 ha, replacing it with a further 1.5 ha of clone 667 and 777 Pinot Noir. They have also engaged Antony Worch of Alexandra Vintners as of the 2015 vintage to make their wines. Here, I review the new 2015 Rosé and Gewurztraminer.

Ruru Central Otago Rosé 2015 iconStarGoldiconStarGoldiconStarGoldiconStarGold
Bright, pale candy-floss pink, a little lighter on the rim. The nose is elegantly presented with well-proportioned aromas of strawberry fruit lifted by soft red floral notes, the fruit revealing subtle herbal and fruit pastille confectionary nuances and a suggestion of minerals with aeration. Dry to taste and medium-bodied, the mouthfeel is bright and lively with piquant and thirst-quenching flavours of strawberries and fruit pastilles along with red floral elements. The fruit is tightly bound and is driven by slippery, mouthwatering acidity enhancing the fine and dry textures and adding to the linearity. The wine flows with good energy, carrying to a long, dry finish with strawberry and confectionary nuances. This is a tight and concentrated dry rosé with strawberry fruit and slippery, thirst-quenching acidity. Serve as an aperitif, with canapes and with antipasto over the next 2 years.100% Pinot Noir cool-fermented in stainless-steel to 13.0% alc. and 4.4 g/L RS. 105 cases made. 17.5+/20 Sep 2015RRP $19.99

Bright, very pale straw-yellow colour with slight green hues. This has a tightly concentrated and firm nose with aromas of rose petal florals entwined with flinty and minerally lees elements, unfolding notes of root ginger, earth and musk. This has good depth and intensity. Off-dry to taste and medium-bodied, the palate features a firmly bound core of rose petal florals, Turkish Delight, root ginger and minerally lees and reductive complexities. The wine is elegant in proportion with soft acidity and a smooth textured line. Some phenolics emerge, lending grip as the wine carries to a dry finish with subtle bitter stonefruit kernel and ginger nuances. This is a tightly concentrated, smooth-flowing, off-dry Gewurztraminer with rose petal florals and flinty mineral notes. Serve with Middle Eastern fare and semi-hard cheeses over the next 3+ years.
